Weekly US vinyl album sales set modern-era record – Billboard

Weekly vinyl album sales in the United States hit a modern era record, as 2.11 million vinyl albums were sold in the week ending Dec. 23, according to MRC Data. This was the biggest vinyl record sales week since MRC Data began tracking music sales in 1991.

This is the first time that weekly vinyl album sales have surpassed 2 million in the MRC Data era. The previous one-week record, since 1991, came a year ago, when 1.84 million vinyl records were sold in the week ending December 24, 2020.

LP vinyl sales jumped in the week ending December 23 – 45% from the previous week (1.46 million) – fueled by holiday purchases leading up to Christmas Day on December 25 .

Best-selling vinyl album of the week ending December 23 was Adele’s 30, with 59,000 copies sold. It ranks at # 1 on Billboardweekly ranking of vinyl albums for a fifth consecutive week (ranking dated January 1, 2022). 30 has sold 293,000 copies on vinyl in the United States and is the best-selling vinyl LP of 2021.

Sixth consecutive week of vinyl sales of over one million: Additionally, the week ending December 23 was the sixth week in a row that vinyl album sales exceeded one million copies. Since MRC Data began electronically tracking music sales in 1991, weekly vinyl record sales have only exceeded one million copies 14 times, and eight of those weeks were in 2021.

Half of the albums sold were vinyl: In total, in the week ending December 23, vinyl album sales accounted for 50% of all albums sold in the United States (2.11 million out of 4.23 million). The latter figure includes all sales of physical albums (CDs, vinyls, cassettes, etc.) as well as sales of digital albums. Vinyl album sales accounted for 57% of all physical albums sold for the week (2.11 million out of 3.72 million).

Weekly LP vinyl sales overtake CD sales: And, for the 23rd week in 2021, weekly vinyl record sales topped CD album sales – 2.11 million vinyl records compared to 1.58 million CDs. Since 1991, vinyl records have surpassed CD sales in just 28 weeks: five weeks in 2020 and 23 weeks – so far – in 2021. (There is one week left in the follow-up year 2021, ending on the 30th. December.)
